ADAS: The Importance of Calibrations and Knowing When Calibrations are Needed

Updated: Aug 25, 2021

Don't think you can skip the calibration process. You could be affecting the vehicle's ability to help the driver and increasing the risk for ADAS features to incorrectly function.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, commonly referred to as ADAS systems, are the features of the future for the automotive industry. These systems are an additional tool for drivers to better operate vehicle's by helping to drive and park the vehicle with a number of cameras and sensors. It is vitally important to make sure these ADAS systems are properly aligned and calibrated when the OEM manufacturer says they should be. Below Crown Collision Solutions wants to highlight the times most makes/models require specific calibrations. As you can see from the image above, these systems help make our roads safer, but a lot of times people are ignoring what manufacturers say about when to service calibrations.

Front Facing Camera/Windshield Calibrations (camera and bracket found behind windshield near rear view mirror): Perform Calibration When:

  1. Camera is replaced

  2. Windshield is replaced

  3. When a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is present

  4. When alignment or suspension work has been performed

Front Facing Radar/Millimeter Wave Radar Adjustment (found in grille/bumper or in front emblem):

Perform Calibration When:

  1. Sensor is reinstalled after removal

  2. New sensor is installed

  3. Sensor or nearby parts are impacted due to a collision

  4. Sensor can not recognize a vehicle ahead

Blind Spot Monitoring/Master and Slave Radar Sensors (found in rear of vehicle on the rear bumper or rear quarter):

Perform Calibration When:

  1. Sensor is reinstalled after removal

  2. New sensor is installed

  3. Sensor or nearby parts are impacted due to a collision

Passenger Seat Weight Calibration:

Perform Calibration When:

  1. After any collision even if no airbags were deployed

  2. Front passenger seat components have been removed or replaced

These are a few of the most common or frequently calibrated systems but there are more. Crown Collision Solutions is here to be your dedicated calibration center. We service most makes and models and will help you identify the calibrations needed for your vehicle if you are unsure. Click the link below to book a calibration appointment or give us a call. Just remember, keep the roads safe and make sure vehicle's are always properly calibrated.
